I agree with other reviewers who find this good pulp sci-fi. The term is not an insult, either. Some of the greatest horror and sci-fi stories are part of the "pulp" group - e.g., H.P. Lovecraft.This is a good solid sci-fi story with adventure, interesting characters, battles in space, and, of course aliens. It's a very entertaining read and mostly well-written. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because there are a few parts that can use tightening up, such as at the beginning where he loses an object, apparently to create suspense, and then only a few sentences later overcomes this obstacle (I'm being vague to avoid this being a spoiler).
If you like sci-fi stories especially from the 50's, this is a good light read that I would recommend. If a sequel comes out, I will be sure to purchase it.

This is a book that anyone can pick up and enjoy; it manages to maintain the same level of excitement and enjoyment throughout. I found it difficult to put down and I was disappointed when it ended. The book introduces characters that will make an impact on even the lightest of readers. The only real criticism that I would make of the book is that perhaps at times it skips over situations that needed to be developed a little further giving the story more depth. However, all in all this is still a fantastic novel and I look forward to the sequels. Buy it you won't be disappointed.
Make no mistake about it! I am not a science fiction fan. In fact, I seldom read the stuff, because I don't want to read just about spaceships and rayguns and other gadgets. But I fell in love with Rockoids. The story has a heart, about two damaged souls seeking out each other across time and space. It's the same eternal, everlasting love imagery that captured my attention when I saw that cult movie, "Somewhere in Time," years ago. I read the book from beginning to end in one sitting, and enjoyed every moment of it. Fast-paced action, a story line with an unexpected twist. I can't wait for the movie or the TV series.
LIKE ACTION AND ADVENTURE IN SPACE? Find yourself a black hole and go for a real ride. Its been a long timesince a SF book has moved me -- read em alot when I was a kid, and everything today is just a modification of what was on the market 30 years ago. But Mr S has taken creativity to a new level. Fast paced, full of punch you will want to go along for this adventure regardless of your age.
I met the Steinbergs during a book signing in Arizona. I enjoyed their informative and sometimes funny repartee, but more important, I also ordered a copy of "Attack of the Rockoids" and enjoyed it just as much if not more. It is one of the best science books I've read in an awful long time, with plenty of excitement and suspense.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I grew up reading science fiction and haven't felt this good about a novel in years. This book has plenty of "soul," too, since it is also a great, classic story of star-crossed lovers. I recommend it even to folks who don't normally dig science fiction.
Moves well. Easy read. Keeps you reading to see what happens. Good enough to get me started on the sequel.
This story reads like '50s pulp science fiction ... in a good way. There's no deep moral message here, just a fun read with some interesting characters and a plot that takes you out of the ambiguities of everyday life into an alternate reality of clear right and wrong. The hero is a virtuous but troubled former military officer who contends with inner daemons while battling the forces of evil. The heroine is a beautiful, brilliant, and powerful alien from the stars. They come together to vanquish the forces of evil, with a little romance on the side. What more could you want!
This book and its successor "Rockoids II The Coming of the Protectors" are not likely to be nominated for the Nobel Price for literature, but they are fun, easy reads for those times when you want a simple, unchallenging escape from reality.
Gene Steinberg and his son Grayson have written a great sci-fi read here. Many know Gene by his great how-to books on computers, particularly apple macintosh computers. I was always impressed he is one of the few authors that if you e-mail him, will actually do his best to give you helpful advice regarding computer issues - far and above what most authors would do. Gene also publishes "the night owl" computer newsletter, which is always a great read.
But this I believe is his first endeavor into the sci-fi world - at least by writing a book, and both of these authors have done a great job with developing a great sci-fi story, with interesting characters. As with most great sci-fi's,. there is the morality questions that pop up - making you think - what if this happened? How would we respond?
